Image a young family who have newly moved into their home only to find razer blades pour out from the walls as they go to knock down an interior wall. Sounds like something from a scary movie but this is more likely then you may think. Why could this happen?
The blades you might find are often referred to as safety razers of the early twentieth century. These now trendy double-edged blades were the only way to shave at home in the 1950s and their popularity posed a problem. Most home owners would burn their trash and spread the ashes in their gardens. Unfortunately razer blades would remain intact after the low heat trash fire and would pose a risk to gardeners.
Safety razers’ popularity in the 1950s posed a real problem.
An alternative disposal method was needed and the solution was a slot installed on the wall or inside a medicine cabinet mounted inside the wall. Used razer blades would be inserted into the designated slot and the blades would fall down the space between the studs. It was thought at the time that it would take decades for the thin razers to stack up high enough to create a problem.

Newer methods of shaving made the use of these special medicine cabinets outdated. Medicine cabinets with slots were soon replaced and forgotten. Now from time to time when contractors open up interior walls to remodel, they occasionally find piles of razor blades.
